The fundamental objective of the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania (HNCT/EMNT) is contributing to the achievement of goals formulated by the Hungarian national community living in Transylvania; to the protection of its rights and interests; to the consolidation of civil society, political pluralism, democracy and the rule of law as well as to the economic, social, cultural and institutional development of regions.

The HNCT/EMNT aims to:

  1. protect the rights and interests of the Hungarian national community living in Transylvania;
  2. support the endeavours of the respective community aimed at attaining autonomy based on the right to exercise comprehensive internal self-determination;
  3. contribute to attaining the status of constituent nation within the Romanian State as well as to achieving full and de facto political equality by the Hungarian national community living in Transylvania/Romania;
  4. promote pluralism in public life, generally, and in politics, particularly; together with the observance of human and community rights as well as the protection of national and religious communities;
  5. contribute to the elimination of discrimination against individuals and communities as well as urge for positive action in justifiable cases;
  6. assist social and political organisations in fulfilling their functions and objectives as well as contribute to the development of the value-based political culture and to the consolidation of institutions implementing the rule of law principle;
  7. contribute to the economic, social, cultural and institutional development of regions;
  8. strengthen national and social solidarity as well as cooperation between the constituent nations of the Romanian State;
  9. contribute to carrying out justice and performing reparation in historical and political respects as well as to developing social justice to the fullest extent possible together with promoting complete transparency and comprehensive lustration in what regards all individuals who cooperated with state security agencies.
